Social bookmarking is a way of saving your favorite sites online just as the favorites folder that exists in your browser. The favorites you save on social bookmarking sites are available for the public to see unlike your own favorites.

When you save a site to a social bookmarking site you also tag the URL with keywords contained inside the content. Since you are tagging this content they now show up in search engines and also become backlinks to the URL. How does that help you? If you’ve read this site about the importance of backlinks you know that backlinks are needed for increasing web site traffic. If the URL of your site is showing up in social bookmarking site then you are receiving backlinks to your posts or pages. Figured it our yet? Wikipedia describes microblogging as “a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia such as photos or audio clips and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user.” Kind of sounds like a blog doesn’t it? After all our blogs have photos, audio clips, and text. They are published to viewers of our blog and we can restrict who we want to see them.

The advantage of microblog platforms such as Twitter is we don’t have to work with code or widgets, headers, and other such stuff that takes away time from our busy days. We can just log in and tweet away @ 140 characters per tweet. But we really need to get back to the subject of this post and it is using microblogging to increase website traffic. Basically, we are looking at how we can use Twitter to drive traffic to our regular blogs and sites.

One way to increase your web site traffic through microblogging and twitter in particular is the quite simple way of adding a link in the tweet back to your website. You basically use the tweet to create a headline then at the end put the link. When doing this all your followers that are interested in the headline just click and they go to your site. I would recommend that you use a shortening service such as Bit.ly  so you can optimize the 140 characters you have available. Twitter will shorten your link for you but Bit.ly has the advantage of shortening it more, plus it tracks how many people actually click on the link.

Another way to increase your website traffic using Twitter is utilizing the WP-Twitter Plug In. This plug in will create and broadcast a tweet every time you update or make a new post to your blog. It is very easy to install and saves you from manually going to twitter and typing in the title of your post and link. And to make your life easier you can go to social media sites such as Facebook and Friendster and use their twitter applications to have your tweets post on your front page. With those tools now all you have to do is post on your blog which in turn sends out a tweet, which in turn hits your Facebook, Friendster or other social sites automatically. If you have thousands of users on those sites they will now see what you are posting and can click on the link.

If this all sounds exciting and you want the website traffic, it all comes down to using the tools and having the followers. You may have your ways of getting your followers but remember the more followers you have the more traffic that is possible to your blog or website. I use a very inexpensive set of tools called Twitter Traffic Machine  to build my list of followers. These followers are not just a bunch of people not interested in what I’m saying but free web site traffic that is also targeted website traffic. One difference between just microblogging and regular blogging is the ability in regular blogging to monetize your website. You can put ads on your blog and make money or even earn a good living doing it. If you are just using twitter and don’t have a blog you now have a chance to monetize your tweets. The cool thing about social bookmarking sites is that they allow a practice known as “deep linking” where you not only bookmark your home page but any posts or pages within the site. Offer Something Free
If you offer some kind of reward such as free report or DVD you will get people’s attention quickly and get your product or program seen by many. But there are two schools of thought here as if free items are effective. One side says that many people will take advantage of the free offer and never come back while the other side says the free offer is akin to getting your foot in the door. I’m not sure what side is right but if you get your foot inside the door make sure your presentation is good enough to lead them to the end product.

Network, Network, Network
Have you figured out that networking is a big thing? Seriously you have to network with your friends, family, and other firms in your market. This is the crux of social media marketing and if right will pay off greatly. But using social media to get leads is only effective if we get the right leads and this is done by concentrating on leads from your target audience. Search through profiles of people to see if they offer the same products or service which you provide. Leaders in your field will have many followers or friends and you should try to add them to your own network.

Keep the Content Current
If people somehow stumble upon your profile make sure it shows recent entries and updates. Nothing turns a person off more in social media if the profile they are viewing is more than a few days old. Most services on social sites offer an update of status. If you want to keep their attention and get the sales you must provide fresh content.
